7th ISUFitaly International Conference: CITY RENEWAL AND URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY: Morphological Value of City’s Traces

The 7th ISUFitaly International Conference, to be held in Naples from 18 to 20 February 2026, continues the tradition of interdisciplinary dialogue promoted by the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF). Organized by the DiARC Department of Architecture at the University of Naples “Federico II”, the conference will take place at Palazzo Gravina, in the heart of the historic city.
Titled “City Renewal and Urban Archaeology: Morphological Value of the City’s Traces”, this edition invites participants to reflect on the relationship between historical urban forms and contemporary urban transformation. Emphasizing the role of urban morphology in processes of regeneration and renewal, the event proposes a critical reading of the city through its visible and buried traces—material and conceptual.
Naples, with its dense archaeological layering and dynamic urban evolution, offers a compelling context to explore how the study of form can inform new approaches to urban design, heritage integration, and spatial continuity.
The conference encourages contributions across a range of thematic areas, including:
- Theories of the city’s interpretation
- Theory of urban form and urban composition
- Ancient city and contemporary urban contexts
- Primary elements and urban fabrics
- Morphological methods in historical cities
- Spatial analysis and urban form reading
- Urban archaeology as a tool for renewal
- The relationship between underlying (Ichnoi) and emerging forms
- Urban design for archaeological sites
- Archaeological parks, public space, and infrastructure within the consolidated city
The aim is to foster a shared space of investigation where historical knowledge and contemporary design intersect, advancing both theoretical research and applied practice in urban morphology.
Abstract submissions are invited in the form of a 250-word proposal, including: paper title, author(s), affiliation, contact information (email, phone, address), and up to five keywords. Submissions should be sent to isufnapoli2026@gmail.com no later than 13 October 2025. A downloadable abstract template is available at https://www.isufitaly.it/.
Selected papers may be considered for publication in academic journals associated with ISUFitaly. A digital volume of proceedings will be made available following the event.
